What should I expect in a Columbia University admissions interview, and how can I prepare for it?

I’m a high school senior and I might get offered a Columbia interview as part of my application process. I’ve done regular job-style interviews before, but I’m not sure how a college interview is different or what Columbia interviewers usually focus on.

I’m mainly trying to understand what the conversation is like and how to prepare without sounding overly scripted.

Expect a conversational alumni interview, not a high-pressure evaluation. The interviewer usually writes a short report about your interests, communication style, and fit, but the interview is only one small part of the process.

Most Columbia interviews focus on why you want Columbia specifically, what you care about academically, what you do outside class, and how you think. You should be ready to talk about a few activities or experiences in a reflective way, not just list accomplishments. They may also ask about your high school experience, intellectual interests, a challenge you have faced, or what you hope to explore in college.

For Columbia in particular, prepare concrete reasons that connect to the university’s character. That could include the Core Curriculum, the balance between broad intellectual discussion and specialization, research or academic departments you genuinely want to explore, and the New York City setting if it matters to your goals. The strongest answers sound specific and personal, like why seminar-style discussion appeals to you or how a program, lab, or student opportunity connects to something you already care about.

To avoid sounding scripted, do not memorize full answers. Instead, make short notes on 4 or 5 themes: why Columbia, academic interests, one or two meaningful extracurriculars, a challenge or growth moment, and what you want from a college community. Practice saying them out loud in different ways so your answers stay natural.

Also prepare a few thoughtful questions for the interviewer. Good ones are about their experience with the Core, how students use the city in practice, or what surprised them most about Columbia culture. Avoid questions with answers that are easy to find on the website.
