What kinds of questions are usually asked in a Columbia University alumni interview?
I’m a high school senior and I might have a Columbia interview soon, so I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what the conversation is usually like.
I’m not looking for exact scripts, just the common types of questions people tend to get asked so I can prepare without sounding rehearsed.

Columbia alumni interviews are usually conversational, not high-pressure. Most interviewers ask broad questions that help them understand how you think, what matters to you, and why Columbia makes sense for you.
Common question types include: tell me about yourself, walk me through your high school experience, what are your main academic interests, what activities matter most to you, and what are you proud of outside the classroom. They may also ask about a challenge you faced, a meaningful project, a leadership experience, or how you spend your time when no one is making you do something.
You should also expect Columbia-specific questions. The big ones are usually why Columbia, why your intended major or areas of study, what you hope to explore in college, and what parts of Columbia’s environment appeal to you. Because Columbia is known for its Core Curriculum, New York City location, and strong intellectual culture, interviewers sometimes ask what kind of community or learning environment helps you thrive.
Some interviewers ask lighter or more reflective questions too. Examples include what book you’ve enjoyed recently, what issue you care about, what class you would create, what you like to discuss with friends, or what you would want your future roommate to know about you.
You’ll probably have time to ask questions back, and that part matters. Ask thoughtful things about the alumni’s experience, campus culture, academic exploration, or how students engage with the city. Avoid questions with answers that are easy to find on Columbia’s website.
The best preparation is to have a few real stories ready rather than memorized answers. Know how to talk naturally about your interests, a couple of activities that genuinely matter to you, one or two challenges or turning points, and specific reasons Columbia fits you.
