What level of extracurricular involvement does Duke expect from applicants?

I'm a high school junior trying to figure out whether my activities are strong enough for selective schools like Duke. I have a few clubs and one activity I care a lot about, but I'm not sure if Duke looks for a long list of extracurriculars or more depth and leadership in a smaller number of things.

I'm trying to understand the general expectation so I can judge my application realistically.

Duke does not expect a huge laundry list of extracurriculars. What matters more is sustained commitment, impact, and fit with your interests than having the maximum number of clubs filled in.

Duke’s application review is holistic, and extracurriculars are one important part of how they assess what you will contribute to campus. They are looking for evidence that you pursued things seriously, used your time well, and made a difference in some setting, whether that is a school club, job, research, family responsibility, sport, art, or community work.

If you have one activity you care a lot about, that can be a real strength, especially if your involvement shows progression. That might mean leadership, creating something new, mentoring others, earning recognition, or simply sticking with it for years and taking on more responsibility.
