Is Dartmouth need-blind for admissions, and what does that mean for financial aid?

I'm trying to figure out whether applying for financial aid at Dartmouth can affect my chances of getting in. I'm a high school junior, and my family would definitely need a lot of aid if I applied.

I keep seeing the term need-blind, but I'm not fully sure how it works in practice or whether it applies to everyone.

Dartmouth is need-blind for U.S. applicants, which means your ability to pay is not considered when the admissions office evaluates your application. If you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or otherwise treated as a domestic applicant for aid purposes, applying for financial aid should not hurt your chances of admission.

Need-blind does not mean everyone gets the same aid, or that aid will necessarily make Dartmouth cheap enough automatically. Your actual package depends on your family’s income, assets, household situation, and Dartmouth’s methodology. Some families qualify for very large grants, while others may still be expected to contribute a substantial amount.
