What is Cornell University known for academically?

I’m starting to build my college list and I keep hearing that Cornell is really strong academically, but I’m not sure what that actually means in terms of specific programs or fields.

I’m trying to understand what Cornell is especially known for compared to other top schools so I can tell whether it fits my interests.

Cornell is known for having both Ivy-level strength and unusually broad academic range. Compared with many other top schools, it stands out because it combines elite programs in engineering, business, agriculture, hospitality, labor relations, architecture, and life sciences all in one university.

Some of its most recognized areas are engineering, computer science, biology, economics, and architecture. The College of Engineering is especially well regarded, and Cornell is often seen as one of the strongest Ivies for STEM.

It is also famous for programs that are more specialized or distinctive than what you find at many peer schools. Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations is one of the most prominent undergraduate labor and employment schools anywhere.

Cornell is also a major name in agriculture, environmental science, animal science, and food science because of its land-grant colleges. That gives it a practical, research-heavy strength in fields that many other elite private universities do not offer at the same scale.

If you are interested in business, Cornell has strong options through Dyson, Nolan, and broader economics or applied economics paths. For pre-med or science-oriented students, Cornell is well known for rigorous biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and research access.

Academically, Cornell also has a reputation for being challenging and intellectually intense. It tends to appeal to students who want serious depth in a field, lots of course options, and access to both academic and pre-professional programs.
