How important is Columbia University’s recommended course rigor in admissions?

I’m a junior trying to plan my senior schedule, and I keep seeing references to Columbia wanting a very rigorous high school curriculum. My school has AP and honors classes, but there are limits on how many I can take at once.

I’m trying to understand how admissions looks at Columbia’s recommended course rigor when your school doesn’t make it easy to load up on the hardest classes.

Columbia cares a lot about course rigor, but always in the context of what your high school actually offers and allows. They are looking for whether you challenged yourself relative to your school’s opportunities.

If your school limits how many AP or honors classes students can take, that will not count against you as long as your schedule still reflects strong academic ambition within those rules. Admissions officers read your school profile, which explains course offerings, policies, and restrictions. That context matters a lot.

For senior year, try to keep a challenging schedule across your main academic areas rather than backing off too early. If there are school-based limits, your counselor can help by making sure that is clear in their recommendation or school report.
