What questions are usually asked in a Colgate admissions interview?

I’m a high school junior thinking about applying to Colgate, and I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what the interview is like.

I’m not looking for exact scripts, just the kinds of questions they usually ask so I can prepare without sounding rehearsed.

Colgate interviews are usually conversational, not high-pressure. You should expect questions that help the interviewer understand who you are, how you think, and why Colgate interests you.

Common ones include: tell me about yourself, what are you involved in at school or outside of school, what academic subjects interest you most, and what do you like to do when you are not busy with classes. They may also ask about a meaningful activity, a challenge you have faced, or something you are proud of.

You should also be ready for school-specific questions like why Colgate, what you hope to study, what kind of college community you want, and what draws you to a liberal arts environment.

Some interviewers ask reflective questions such as: what would your friends say about you, what values matter most to you, how have you grown during high school, or what do you hope to contribute to a campus community. Those are not meant to trick you. They are trying to get a clearer picture of your personality and presence.

You should also prepare a few thoughtful questions to ask them. Good ones are about student culture, advising, residential life, research, discussion-based classes, or how students explore interests before choosing a path.

The best preparation is to have a few strong stories in mind rather than memorized answers. Think of moments that show how you learn, lead, collaborate, or care about something. That tends to sound natural and gives you material for a wide range of questions.
