What kinds of college interview questions should a first-generation student expect?

I'm a high school junior and I'll probably be the first person in my family to apply to college, so the interview part feels pretty unfamiliar. I want to get a realistic sense of the types of questions colleges usually ask first-gen students so I can prepare without overthinking it.

I'm not looking for school-specific questions, just the common themes or examples that tend to come up.

Most college interviews are not trying to test whether you already know how college works. They usually focus on getting to know you, how you think, and what matters to you. As a first-generation student, you should expect mostly the same questions other students get, plus occasional questions that touch on your background, support system, or what draws you to college.

Common themes include who you are, what you care about, and how you spend your time. You might hear questions like: Tell me about yourself. What are you interested in academically? What do you do outside class? What is an experience that has shaped you? What is something you are proud of?

They also often ask about school and goals. Expect versions of: Why do you want to go to college? What do you hope to study? What kind of environment helps you thrive? What are you looking for in a college community? What do you want to explore that you have not had access to yet?

For first-generation students, some interviewers may ask questions that open the door to your family or educational context, but these should not feel like a quiz. Examples: How has your background influenced your goals? What has the college process been like for you? Who has supported you? Have you had to figure out parts of school or planning on your own? These are chances to show initiative, perspective, and self-awareness.

You may also get behavioral questions, like: Tell me about a challenge you faced. Describe a time you took responsibility. Tell me about a community you are part of. What is a problem you would like to help solve?
