When should international students apply to US colleges to have enough time for visas and financial planning?

I’m a high school junior studying outside the US and trying to figure out the right overall timeline for applying. I know international students have extra steps like visa paperwork and planning costs, so I want to understand how far in advance people usually apply.

I’m not looking for exact yearly deadlines, just a general sense of when international students should aim to submit applications compared to US students.

International students should usually aim to apply on the same admissions timeline as U.S. students, but with more buffer built in before and after submission.

The biggest difference is not that internationals apply much later or earlier than domestic students, but that they should prepare earlier. You may need extra time for English proficiency testing, score reporting, transcript translation or evaluation, financial documents, and researching whether a school offers enough aid for international students.

Once you are admitted, visa processing usually begins only after you commit and receive the school’s immigration paperwork, so having decisions in hand earlier can help. Financial planning also takes time because you may need to compare aid offers, confirm proof of funds, and estimate travel and living costs.
