How do Indian students apply to U.S. colleges as international applicants?
I’m a high school student in India and I’m trying to understand the overall application process for U.S. colleges. Most guides I find are either too vague or focused on students in the U.S., so I’m not sure what steps are different for someone applying from India.
I’m mainly looking for a clear picture of how the process works from choosing colleges to submitting the application as an international student.

Indian students usually apply to U.S. colleges through the same main platforms as domestic students, most commonly the Common App, Coalition App, or a college’s own application portal. The biggest difference is that you apply as an international applicant, so colleges will review your academics in the context of the Indian curriculum and may ask for additional documents like proof of English proficiency or financial forms.
The usual process is: build a college list, check each college’s requirements, prepare transcripts and predicted grades, take any required tests, write essays, request recommendation letters, and submit applications by the deadline.
For testing, International students may also need an English proficiency test such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test.
You will also usually need a school counselor or principal to submit school documents, even if your school does not have a formal counseling office.
If you need financial aid, pay close attention to each college’s policy for international students.
After applying, you may get an interview request from some colleges. If admitted and you choose to enroll, the college issues an I-20 form, which you use to apply for the F-1 student visa. So the full path is application first, then admission decision, then financial and visa paperwork.
