When should I file the FAFSA for college if I want the best chance at financial aid?
I’m a high school senior trying to figure out the financial aid timeline, and I keep hearing that filing the FAFSA earlier can matter. I want to understand when I should submit it in general so I do not miss out on aid that might be limited.
I’m not asking about a specific school deadline, just the best timing strategy for filing.

File the FAFSA as soon as it opens for the academic year you’re applying for. In general, the best strategy is to submit it early rather than waiting, because some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis at the state or school level.
Even though federal Pell Grants and federal student loans are not first-come, first-served in the same way, other types of aid often are. That can include state grants, campus-based aid, and some institutional need-based funds.
You do not need to wait until you have finalized every college on your list. You can send the FAFSA to schools you’re considering and update it later if needed.
Also make sure you complete any other required financial aid forms just as early, especially if a college asks for the CSS Profile or additional documents. Filing the FAFSA early helps, but missing a separate school form can still reduce your aid eligibility.
