How should I compare merit-aid value between the University of Florida and Northeastern?

I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Florida and Northeastern, and merit aid will be a major factor in my decision. I want to understand how to evaluate the overall value of each offer beyond just comparing the scholarship amounts, including remaining costs and what the scholarships cover.

The more valuable offer is the one that produces the lower four-year net cost after renewable aid, not the one with the larger scholarship name; because UF’s starting cost is often lower, especially for Florida residents, a smaller UF award can outweigh a much larger Northeastern merit scholarship.

Build a side-by-side annual budget using each school’s official cost of attendance, then subtract only grants and scholarships that do not need to be repaid. Include tuition and required fees, housing and food, health insurance if applicable, books, travel, and personal expenses. Separate direct charges billed by the university from estimated living costs, since an off-campus housing choice can change the comparison substantially.

Read each award’s renewal terms closely. Confirm whether it is guaranteed for four years or eight semesters, whether it requires full-time enrollment, a minimum GPA, continuous enrollment, or participation in a specific program.

Also distinguish merit aid from need-based grants, loans, work-study, and one-time awards. A package that includes federal loans may look larger but does not lower the true cost in the same way as scholarship money.

Finally, compare what the extra cost would buy. Northeastern’s co-op structure can provide paid work experience, but earnings are not guaranteed and should not be counted as scholarship funding. UF may offer stronger financial value if it leaves you with far less debt while still providing the academic program, opportunities, and campus experience you want.
