How much does location affect internship opportunities at UW–Madison versus Santa Clara University?

For school-year internship access, Santa Clara University has a meaningful location advantage because it sits in Silicon Valley, close to employers in Santa Clara, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and the broader Bay Area. Students can realistically commute to part-time roles at technology companies, startups, venture-backed firms, nonprofits, and corporate offices while staying enrolled. UW–Madison offers solid opportunities, but its most convenient academic-year options are more concentrated in Madison itself.

At Santa Clara, proximity matters especially for students pursuing computer science, engineering, business, data, product, finance, and entrepreneurship. Many employers are within a workable drive or transit commute. The tradeoff is that Silicon Valley internships are highly competitive, so being nearby improves access and networking, not automatic outcomes.

Madison has a strong local internship ecosystem in state government, public policy, health care, research, education, insurance, and regional technology. UW students can pursue roles with Wisconsin state agencies, the university and affiliated research labs, local startups, health systems, and employers such as Epic in nearby Verona. Those opportunities can be particularly practical during the academic year because they are designed around the Madison student population.

For UW–Madison students targeting major national tech, consulting, finance, or media employers, the school-year commute is less convenient: Milwaukee and Chicago are not daily-commute options for most students. Those students often rely more on summer internships, remote roles, alumni connections, or a semester away.
