Is Northwestern worth choosing over MIT for undergraduate computer science?

MIT is especially compelling for students drawn to systems, AI research, robotics, theory, hardware-software work, or building ambitious technical projects alongside classmates who are intensely invested in those areas.

Northwestern fits students who want strong computer science while also seriously engaging with fields such as economics, design, journalism, cognitive science, music, social policy, or the humanities. Northwestern’s CS options through both the McCormick School of Engineering and Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences can support different academic styles, while its quarter system provides room to explore more courses and combinations.

Northwestern can also be more attractive for someone who prefers a collaborative campus with a wider mix of preprofessional, artistic, and academic communities, plus access to Chicago internships and industry connections. A Northwestern CS graduate can reach excellent software, product, consulting, research, and graduate-school outcomes; choosing Northwestern does not close meaningful career doors.

The key question is whether you would genuinely use Northwestern’s interdisciplinary flexibility and broader campus culture. If you would mostly build your identity around intensive computing, research, and technical peers, MIT’s environment is likely worth the choice, assuming the financial terms are comparable.
