Is Northwestern worth the higher cost compared with Ohio State?

For most students, Northwestern is not worth taking on considerable additional student debt over Ohio State; the price gap needs to be narrowed substantially by grants, family support, or an unusually strong Northwestern-specific academic reason. Ohio State is a major research university with extensive course offerings, undergraduate research, internships, alumni connections, and strong outcomes across many fields. A lower debt load can give you far more flexibility after graduation, especially for graduate school, public-service work, entrepreneurship, or a first job that is not highly paid.

Northwestern does provide real advantages: smaller classes in many programs, a more intimate private-university environment, the quarter system’s broader course access, and unusually close ties to Chicago through its Evanston location. Its programs in areas such as journalism, engineering, economics, theater, communications, and certain interdisciplinary paths can offer distinctive opportunities. Those benefits matter most when they connect directly to a clear plan you cannot realistically replicate at Ohio State.

Career outcomes also depend heavily on the field and on how actively you use each campus. Northwestern may offer a denser recruiting network for some highly selective industries, but Ohio State has a large, loyal alumni network and deep employer ties in Columbus, including opportunities with major corporations, government, health care, research, and technology organizations. A motivated Ohio State student who pursues internships, research, leadership, and faculty relationships can be very competitive.

Compare the actual four-year net cost, not sticker price, and estimate the monthly payment attached to the extra borrowing. If Northwestern would require loans that meaningfully constrain your choices after college, Ohio State is the financially sounder decision. Northwestern becomes easier to justify when the remaining premium is manageable without heavy debt and its particular program, campus experience, or recruiting access is central to your goals.
