Should I apply test optional to college if my SAT or ACT score is below the school's typical range?
I'm a junior trying to figure out whether sending my score would help or hurt my application. My GPA and activities are stronger than my test score, and I'm not sure if a lower score is better left out or if submitting it still shows something positive.
I'm looking for how colleges generally evaluate this choice, not school-specific odds.

A lower score can become a negative data point if it suggests you are less academically prepared than other applicants. If your GPA, course rigor, grades in core subjects, recommendations, and activities already present you well, leaving out the score often lets colleges focus on those stronger parts.
Also compare your score to your own transcript. If your grades and course rigor are excellent but your test score is noticeably weaker, the score may not help. If your GPA is harder to interpret because of your school profile, limited AP or IB access, or inconsistent grades, a decent score can sometimes add value even if it is not amazing.
