Which is better for accounting: Tulane or UIUC?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC offers a deeper, more nationally connected accounting pipeline, while Tulane offers a smaller private-school setting and stronger access to the New Orleans and Gulf South business community. For a student focused specifically on accounting preparation, UIUC’s Gies College of Business has a substantially larger accountancy presence, broader recruiting, and especially strong graduate-level options.

UIUC’s Department of Accountancy is widely respected by major public accounting firms, corporations, and accounting academia. Its undergraduate Accountancy program provides a strong technical foundation, and its graduate accountancy programs can be a particularly valuable route for students planning to meet CPA education requirements. Recruiting opportunities are not limited to Illinois: UIUC graduates commonly enter national firms and pursue careers across regions.

Tulane’s Freeman School of Business can still provide solid accounting preparation, especially for someone who wants a more intimate campus environment, cross-disciplinary flexibility, and a career centered in New Orleans or the broader Southeast. Tulane’s private-university experience, active alumni network, and business-school community may be more appealing than a large public flagship. But its accounting program does not have the same scale or national accounting-specific reputation as UIUC’s.

For the stronger overall launch into an accounting career, I would choose UIUC, particularly if you may pursue the CPA, public accounting, corporate accounting, or a specialized master’s degree. Tulane becomes the more compelling choice only if you have a clear preference for its campus experience, financial package, or New Orleans-focused professional network that outweighs UIUC’s accounting advantage.
