Washington University in St. Louis vs. Columbia: Which Is Better for Undergraduate Computer Science?
I’m a high school senior deciding between Washington University in St. Louis and Columbia for computer science. I’m mainly trying to compare the overall undergraduate CS experience, including academics, research, and opportunities to prepare for a software engineering career.

For most students focused on computer science and a software engineering career, Columbia offers the stronger undergraduate platform. Its computer science department has broader visibility in areas such as AI, machine learning, systems, theory, data science, and natural language processing, while its location puts students close to a dense concentration of technology employers, startups, and technical events. Washington University in St. Louis is an excellent CS option, but Columbia’s research scale and New York access create more built-in opportunities during the academic year.

Columbia also has a particularly deep research ecosystem, including the Data Science Institute and labs working across AI, robotics, vision, security, computational biology, and other fields. Undergraduate research is not automatic at either institution, but Columbia students benefit from proximity to a large graduate and professional research community. At WashU, motivated undergraduates may sometimes find it easier to form close relationships with professors and obtain hands-on roles in a smaller, more personal campus environment.
For software engineering preparation, Columbia’s New York City setting is a concrete differentiator. Students can pursue semester-time internships, attend recruiting events and meetups, and build networks with firms in technology, finance, media, health care, and startups without leaving campus for the summer. WashU students still reach strong employers and can build excellent careers through internships, projects, and alumni connections, but most formal internship experiences will be summer-based or require more deliberate planning.
Cost and day-to-day fit can legitimately change this decision. A substantially lower net price at WashU, or a clear preference for a residential campus with a more cohesive undergraduate social environment, is a strong reason not to treat Columbia’s career advantages as decisive.
