Is Duke or Villanova better for a smaller campus experience?

The key tradeoff is that Duke has a more self-contained residential community but a physically much larger, more spread-out campus, while Villanova’s main campus is substantially more compact and simpler to cross on foot. At Duke, first-year students live on East Campus and most later-year students live on West Campus, with a campus bus system connecting the two. Villanova’s academic buildings, residence halls, dining, and central gathering spaces are concentrated much more closely together.

Duke can still feel close-knit because students often spend a great deal of time within their residential quad, campus organizations, and the West Campus core. But its wooded setting, separate East and West campuses, and longer distances make it feel more like a large university environment. Getting from one part of Duke to another may involve planning around a bus ride, particularly during the first year.

Villanova has the more traditional walkable-campus rhythm: students can more readily run into classmates between classes, return to a residence hall between commitments, and reach most daily destinations without transportation.

For the smaller, more compact, and easiest-to-navigate-on-foot experience you describe, Villanova is the clearer choice. Duke may suit someone who wants a strong residential community within the resources and physical scale of a larger research university, but it will not feel as geographically small as Villanova.
