How competitive is admission to Fordham's theater program compared to general Fordham admission?
I’m a junior looking at schools with strong theater options, and Fordham keeps coming up because I’m interested in acting and musical theater. I’m trying to figure out whether applying to the theater program is a lot harder than applying to Fordham overall.
I have decent grades and some school and community theater experience, but I’m not sure how much the audition side changes the admissions picture.

Admission to Fordham’s theater programs is typically more competitive than general Fordham admission because you are going through two filters: academic admission to the university and artistic review for the program.
For acting and musical theatre in particular, the audition matters a lot. Fordham’s overall admission is selective, but theater applicants are competing for a much smaller number of spots, so even academically qualified students can be turned away if the artistic fit or audition does not stand out.
Your grades still matter. A solid academic record can absolutely help, but for acting or musical theatre, school and community theater experience by itself is not what determines admission. What matters more is how effectively you perform in the audition, how well you match what the faculty is looking for, and whether your training and potential come through clearly.
In practical terms, if you are competitive for Fordham academically, applying for theater usually becomes harder, not easier. I would treat it as a selective artistic admission on top of a selective university application.
