At both schools, meaningful internships are attainable, but neither location removes the need to network, apply early, and build relevant experience.

Northwestern has an edge for students seeking internships in fields with a deep Chicago presence, including finance, consulting, media, advertising, journalism, law, civic organizations, and corporate roles. Evanston is not downtown Chicago, so a regular commute takes planning, but it is realistic for part-time internships during the academic year. Northwestern’s quarter system can also make winter and spring scheduling different from a semester calendar, which some students use strategically for off-cycle roles but others find less convenient than a traditional semester.

Emory’s Atlanta location is particularly valuable for pre-health, biomedical research, public health, health policy, nonprofit work, and certain business paths. The nearby Emory Healthcare system, Emory School of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention create unusually relevant possibilities for students whose interests overlap with health and research. Atlanta also offers major-company, startup, film, logistics, and nonprofit internships, though its spread-out geography can make transportation more important than in the Evanston-to-Chicago corridor.

Both institutions provide career advising, employer programming, internship listings, alumni connections, and school-specific support. Northwestern’s alumni network is especially visible across national media, consulting, and corporate fields; Emory’s network is notably useful in Atlanta and in medicine, public health, and related professional communities.
