UC San Diego is exceptionally strong for faculty research and for access to the San Diego innovation, biotech, health-care, and technology ecosystem. Undergraduates can pursue lab work, independent research, design teams, capstone courses, and internships, especially in STEM-related areas. Its proximity to research institutions and companies can be a real asset for students who take initiative.

The distinction is that UC San Diego’s hands-on opportunities are abundant but more self-directed: students typically seek internships and research roles through departments, faculty, career resources, and their own networking. Northeastern provides a more standardized pathway to repeated, extended workplace learning, while UC San Diego may be particularly compelling for someone whose definition of experiential learning centers on research and technical projects.
