Its smaller undergraduate population and close integration with Duke University School of Medicine and Duke Health can make it easier to identify a lab, build a relationship with a faculty investigator, and stay involved long enough to earn substantial responsibility.

A key Duke advantage is proximity: the medical school, hospital system, and major research institutes are central parts of the same campus environment. That creates natural routes into work in areas such as cancer biology, neuroscience, global health, biomedical engineering, and clinical research. For a future medical-school applicant, the most valuable outcome is developing a sustained role that can lead to a strong recommendation, presentation, or thesis; Duke’s scale and mentoring environment can support that well.
