Is the University of Florida or the University of Washington better for undergraduate medical research?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Florida and the University of Washington. I’m interested in pursuing medical research as an undergraduate and possibly applying to medical school later, so I want to understand which school generally offers stronger opportunities for undergraduate involvement in medical research.

For most students seeking undergraduate medical research, the University of Washington has a modest edge because its Seattle campus is embedded in one of the country’s deepest biomedical research ecosystems. UW undergraduates can pursue work through UW Medicine and nearby major research partners such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and the VA Puget Sound system. Its Undergraduate Research Program provides a centralized starting point for finding faculty labs, research opportunities, and presentation support.

The biggest UW advantage is the range of clinically connected research fields available nearby, including cancer biology, infectious disease, global health, neuroscience, immunology, bioengineering, and computational medicine. The tradeoff is that many labs are popular, so students need to contact faculty early and persistently rather than assume a position will be handed to them.

UF remains an excellent place to build a medical-school-ready research record, particularly through UF Health, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and faculty labs across medicine, public health, engineering, and the life sciences. Programs such as the University Scholars Program can give undergraduates structured, mentored research leading to a thesis or presentation. For a Florida resident, UF’s lower cost could be a meaningful advantage, especially because minimizing undergraduate debt matters for students considering medical school.

Choose UW when your priority is the broadest concentration of biomedical institutions and clinically adjacent research options. UF is particularly compelling when affordability is substantially better or when you find a specific UF lab, mentor, or research program that closely matches your interests; sustained involvement and strong mentorship will matter more for medical school than the school name alone.
