Brown vs. Princeton: Which Is Better for a Computer Science Career?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Brown and Princeton and plan to study computer science. I’m mainly trying to understand whether one school offers a meaningful advantage in preparing students for software engineering and other computer science careers.

For a computer science career alone, Princeton offers a modest advantage, especially for students who want a more structured, theory-intensive program and close access to faculty research. Its computer science department is deeply integrated with Princeton’s engineering school, and the required independent work gives undergraduates sustained experience with research, technical writing, and substantial projects. Brown is still an excellent route into software engineering, but its open curriculum puts more responsibility on the student to build academic depth and direction.

Princeton’s AB and BSE pathways make it easier to choose between a broader liberal-arts-centered CS education and a more engineering-focused sequence. That freedom can be ideal for a self-directed student who already knows they want to pursue, for example, human-computer interaction, computational art, tech policy, or a startup. Brown also has strong undergraduate CS coursework and a collaborative campus culture, so it will not limit access to mainstream software engineering recruiting or internships.

For conventional software engineering outcomes, the difference is unlikely to be decisive: students at both schools can reach leading technology employers, startups, and graduate programs.
