McGill can be an outstanding choice for a student who wants rigorous foundational science and is comfortable taking initiative in a large research university. Research opportunities can be excellent, but finding a position may require independently emailing professors, demonstrating relevant coursework or skills, and navigating a larger, less hand-held environment. Cost and career plans should matter substantially. Compare each school’s net price, not sticker price, and factor in travel, housing, health coverage, and visa logistics. McGill may be particularly attractive if its cost is meaningfully lower or if you may pursue graduate school, research, or health-related work in Canada; USC may provide a more direct U.S. professional network.
