How should I approach the Santa Clara University supplemental essay?

I’m applying to Santa Clara and I’m not sure what they’re really looking for in the supplemental essay beyond just good writing. I want to make sure I’m answering it in a way that fits the school instead of sounding generic.

I’m a senior and I already have a Common App essay draft, but this one feels different. I’m trying to figure out what makes a strong Santa Clara-specific response.

Santa Clara’s supplement usually works best when it shows who you are in a very specific way and why that fits SCU’s values. They are not just looking for polished writing. They want evidence that you understand the school’s Jesuit, undergraduate-focused culture and that you can connect it to your own goals, character, and way of engaging with others.

A strong response usually does not sound like a mini personal statement. Instead, pick one clear idea and develop it with concrete detail. If the prompt asks about community, values, belonging, leadership, or impact, focus on a real moment or experience that shows how you think and act, then link that naturally to Santa Clara.

For SCU, the most useful themes to understand are cura personalis, meaning care for the whole person, service and justice, ethical leadership, and using education to contribute to the common good. You do not need to name these terms if that feels forced, but your essay should reflect them in substance.

The biggest mistake is writing a generic why us answer with surface details like location, weather, Silicon Valley, and strong academics. Those can appear, but only if tied to something personal and specific. For example, instead of saying you like Silicon Valley’s opportunities, explain what kind of problem you hope to work on, how you have already explored it, and what SCU resources would help you keep building.
