Should I retake the SAT for college applications?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out if taking the SAT again is actually worth it. I already have a score that seems okay for a lot of schools I’m looking at, but I’m not sure how colleges view retakes or when a score is strong enough to stop.

I’m trying to decide whether retesting would meaningfully help my application or if my time would be better spent on other parts of it.

Retaking the SAT is worth it only if there’s a realistic chance the new score changes how competitive you are at the schools on your list. The simplest way to judge that is to compare your current score to each college’s middle 50 percent SAT range. If you’re already at or above the 75th percentile for most of your target schools, another retake usually has limited value.

If you’re below the midpoint, or especially below the 25th percentile at schools you care about, a retake can help if you have a clear plan to improve.

Colleges generally do not penalize reasonable retakes. Many students test more than once.

It’s probably worth retaking if one of these is true: your practice test scores are consistently higher than your official score, you had a bad test day, you’ve done little prep so far, or one section is clearly dragging down an otherwise strong result.
