Its Oakland location puts students beside the University of Pittsburgh and other nearby colleges, which expands the pool of events, restaurants, clubs, performances, and people beyond CMU itself. CMU also has highly visible traditions such as Spring Carnival, Booth, Buggy races, and student-run arts and cultural organizations that give the campus recurring shared experiences.

CMU is still academically demanding, and its social scene can vary substantially by school and friend group.
