Athens is also a meaningful part of the experience. It is a classic, energetic college town where the university shapes much of the social life, with prominent school spirit, major athletics, music, and student organizations. For many students, that creates a more immersive four-year campus experience than the University of Delaware’s Newark setting.

UGA’s research opportunities are a practical advantage if you may want graduate school, veterinary school, public health, or laboratory work after college. Look closely at labs in departments such as genetics, microbiology, ecology, and biomedical sciences, then see whether their current projects genuinely interest you. Starting research or faculty contact early will matter more than the name of the biology major alone.

The University of Delaware has real strengths: its Newark location provides easier access to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the Mid-Atlantic corridor, and it can be appealing for students who want a somewhat less SEC-centered culture and proximity to East Coast cities. Delaware is especially worth a second look if you are interested in marine or environmental work tied to the coast, or if being near home and regional internship sites is important.

Before deciding, compare the biology degree requirements, not just course titles. Check how soon you can join a lab, whether introductory science sections feel manageable, access to pre-health advising, and the availability of internships or clinical volunteering. With cost removed as a factor, UGA has the edge for the combination of broad life-science opportunities and a more distinctive residential college environment.
