Should I choose the University of Georgia or NC State for an undergraduate statistics degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is NC State’s closer connection to the Research Triangle’s technology, analytics, biotech, and research employers versus UGA’s Athens-based campus experience and access to the broader Atlanta market. For statistics specifically, NC State has a large, longstanding Department of Statistics and a particularly visible quantitative culture across computing, engineering, agriculture, and the sciences. Its Raleigh location can make it easier to pursue semester-time internships, research work, and networking with employers in Raleigh, Durham, and Research Triangle Park.

UGA’s B.S. in Statistics is also a credible, rigorous route, with coursework in statistical theory, computing, and applied analysis. UGA students can build experience through faculty research, campus units that use data, and internships, especially by targeting Atlanta opportunities during summers or through planned travel. Athens offers a more traditional college-town setting, and UGA may be especially appealing if you value its broader campus culture, lower total cost, or specific non-statistics interests you would like to combine with the major.

For internship and statistics-career preparation alone, NC State has the clearer edge. Choose UGA instead if its financial package or personal fit is meaningfully better, or if you have a concrete plan to pair statistics with a UGA strength and actively pursue Atlanta-based experience.
