What is a good application timeline for highly selective colleges during junior and senior year?

I’m a current junior and I want to apply to some very selective schools, but I’m having trouble figuring out when I should be doing each part of the process.

I’m trying to understand the big-picture timeline for things like testing, college list building, teacher recommendations, essays, and submitting applications so I do not end up doing everything too late.

A strong timeline starts in spring of junior year. This is also a good time to visit campuses if possible, or do virtual tours and info sessions.

Take or retake the SAT or ACT if testing will be part of your application strategy. Also, ask 2 teachers for recommendations before junior year ends, ideally from core academic subjects who taught you recently.

In the summer before senior year, finalize your college list, and create a full deadline calendar. Draft your main personal statement, then revise it. This is also the best time to start supplemental essays, especially for schools with multiple short responses.

By September of senior year, confirm your recommenders, ask your counselor about school-specific procedures, and make sure your activities list is polished.

In October and November, submit early applications well before the deadline. Continue finishing regular decision supplements during this time. If you still need testing, earlier is better.

For Regular Decision, aim to have everything done even if deadlines are later. That buffer matters because school offices may be closed. Then, check portals, send any required midyear grades, and make sure every application component was received.
