How to build a college application timeline for senior year

I'm a junior trying to get organized before application season starts, and I feel like there are a lot of moving parts like testing, essays, recommendation letters, and deadlines.

I want to make a realistic college application timeline for senior year so I don't fall behind or miss anything important.

Start by building your timeline backward from your earliest deadline. Put every college on one spreadsheet with columns for application type, deadline, supplements, testing policy, recommendation requirements, financial aid forms, and scholarship deadlines.

For summer before senior year, finalize your college list, visit if possible, and draft your personal statement. This is also the best time to make a resume or activities list and decide whether you still need SAT or ACT testing.

In August and September, create your Common App or other application accounts, confirm your senior course schedule, and ask teachers for recommendation letters early. Give them your resume and a short note about your goals.

By September through October, revise your main essay and start supplements. If you are applying Early Action or Early Decision, aim to have everything ready at least one to two weeks before the official deadline so you have time for proofreading and technical issues.

In October, check whether you need to submit FAFSA, CSS Profile, or both. Financial aid deadlines can be different from application deadlines, so track those separately.

In November and December, submit remaining regular decision applications, send official test scores if needed, and make sure transcripts and recommendation letters were received. Keep checking each college portal after submission because missing documents often show up there.

In January and February, finish any last scholarship applications and verify financial aid documents. In spring, compare offers, visit admitted student events, and commit by the enrollment deadline.

A realistic system is to set one major task per week instead of trying to do everything at once.
