How do I build a balanced college list if I’m aiming for elite colleges?
I’m a high school junior starting to research colleges, and most of the schools I’m drawn to are really selective. I know I shouldn’t make a list that is all reaches, but I’m not sure how to build a realistic one without feeling like I’m giving up on my top choices.
I’m trying to understand how students usually structure a strong college list when they want to aim high but still have solid options.

A balanced list does not mean giving up on elite colleges. It means protecting your future while still giving yourself several real shots at the places you love.
Your likelies should be schools you would genuinely be happy to attend, not just placeholders. That is the part many students get wrong. A good likely is affordable, offers your academic interests, and has a strong chance of admission based on your profile.
Also make sure your list is financially balanced. Run net price calculators now. A school is not really a safety if it is not financially possible.
If you want to aim high, that is totally fine. Just make sure at least a few schools on your list are places where admission is likely and you would feel excited to enroll.
