Is American University or UIUC better for accessing Washington, DC internships?

The biggest practical difference is that American University lets you pursue DC internships during a normal semester, while UIUC students will usually need to use summers, a dedicated Washington program, or a leave/remote arrangement. American is in Northwest DC, with Metro access to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, think tanks, nonprofits, embassies, and advocacy organizations. That proximity makes part-time internships, networking events, informational interviews, and repeat applications far more realistic while classes are in session.

For government, policy, and international-affairs work, AU’s location is a meaningful advantage. Its School of International Service and School of Public Affairs are built around the DC professional ecosystem, and many students combine coursework with internships during the academic year. Being nearby also helps when an employer wants an intern to start quickly, attend in-person events, or work a few days each week rather than only over the summer.

UIUC has substantial university resources, a large alumni network, and strong academic offerings, but Urbana-Champaign is not a day-to-day DC recruiting environment. UIUC students can still reach Washington through summer internships, alumni contacts, faculty referrals, and university-sponsored opportunities. A UIUC student with strong initiative can absolutely secure excellent DC placements, especially for a focused summer internship, but it generally takes more advance planning and may offer fewer chances to build relationships over several semesters.

American University provides the clearer access advantage because DC can become part of your weekly routine rather than an occasional destination. UIUC may make more sense only if it offers a substantially better academic, financial, or major-specific fit for you and you are comfortable deliberately building your DC experience through summers and structured programs.
