Which is better for pre-med research: UT Austin or Ohio State?

I’m a high school senior choosing between UT Austin and Ohio State and plan to pursue pre-med. Research opportunities are one of my main priorities, so I want to understand which school generally offers stronger access to meaningful undergraduate research and mentorship.

UT’s College of Natural Sciences has biology, neuroscience, chemistry, public health, and biomedical labs connected to a major research university.

The Freshman Research Initiative is the clearest differentiator. Students work in small research groups under faculty and graduate-student guidance, often continuing in a lab after the initial sequence. That structure can make it easier to build sustained relationships, technical skills, and eventual recommendation letters for medical-school applications, rather than spending a first year sending cold emails for openings.

Ohio State offers outstanding research, particularly through the Wexner Medical Center and its large academic health system. It can be especially strong for clinical, translational, cancer, neuroscience, and public-health research, with abundant faculty and hospital-based projects.

UT Austin also benefits from proximity to Dell Medical School and growing health-related research in Austin, while retaining a more undergraduate-visible research entry point. At either institution, the best outcome will come from joining a lab early and staying long enough to take on meaningful responsibility.
