The biggest practical difference is scale: UC San Diego offers a much larger, more varied social world, while Pepperdine’s smaller residential campus tends to make repeated, close-knit interactions easier. At UCSD, students often find their core community through their residential college, major, cultural centers, clubs, research groups, and campus events rather than through the entire university at once. Pepperdine’s Malibu campus, smaller student body, and strong residential emphasis can make it easier to recognize people, form routines with classmates, and feel part of a shared campus culture.

UCSD is not inherently unfriendly, but it can feel more self-directed.
