For a student whose top priority is frequent, direct interaction with professors and consistently discussion-based classes, the University of San Diego is likely the stronger choice. USD is a smaller private university with an undergraduate-centered liberal arts structure, so introductory courses are less likely to feel anonymous and faculty accessibility is more built into the experience. UC San Diego offers excellent academics and accomplished professors, but its scale and research mission can make the early undergraduate experience more lecture-heavy.

At USD, smaller classes and a lower student-to-faculty environment make it easier to ask questions, participate regularly, and develop relationships with instructors across disciplines. Professors at USD are expected to place substantial emphasis on teaching undergraduates, and its smaller campus can make office hours, mentorship, and faculty-led projects easier to access without needing to be especially proactive.

UC San Diego’s teaching can be outstanding, particularly in advanced major courses and for students who seek out research, seminars, and faculty office hours. However, many lower-division STEM and popular social science classes enroll large numbers of students and may be taught in lecture format, with discussion sections led by graduate teaching assistants. That model works well for independent students who are comfortable navigating a major research university, but it provides less automatic professor contact.
