UC San Diego vs. San José State: Which Is Better for Tech Internships?

For a student whose top priority is getting internships with Silicon Valley companies during the school year, San José State often has the more practical advantage. Its location makes part-time, in-person, and interview opportunities in San José, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and nearby areas far easier to pursue, and its alumni base is deeply represented across Bay Area tech employers.

UC San Diego is a strong choice for a student who wants a more research-intensive university environment, access to advanced computing-related coursework, and a broader range of paths involving software, AI, data, engineering, or graduate study. UCSD has substantial employer recognition and can lead to excellent internships, including at major technology firms, but students often need to be more proactive about applying nationally or relocating for summer roles. San Diego also has a meaningful tech and biotech scene, though it is not as concentrated as Silicon Valley.

For computer science, your own project portfolio, interview preparation, and early applications will matter heavily at both schools. But purely on proximity and day-to-day access to Silicon Valley recruiting, SJSU has a notable edge.
