The biggest practical difference is housing: tuition and mandatory fees are very close for Florida residents at UF and UCF, but Orlando’s off-campus rent and transportation costs can push UCF’s total price higher. Gainesville is often less expensive for students who share an apartment or choose lower-cost housing, while UCF students may face a higher local rental market and more commuting expenses. At either school, your personal housing choice will matter more than the small difference in published in-state tuition.

Both universities use Florida’s public-university tuition structure, so a full-time in-state student should expect similar direct academic charges. Room type, whether you live on campus, meal-plan use, parking, books, and travel home are the costs most likely to separate the two budgets. UCF’s location in the Orlando area can also mean higher discretionary spending, although students who live with family near campus may make UCF substantially cheaper.

Bright Futures and comparable state or federal aid would apply similarly at both schools, so they usually do not change the basic comparison.
