Is Northeastern or Amherst College generally harder to get into?

Neither is reliably “easier,” but Northeastern often appears harder to enter in Regular Decision because it receives an exceptionally large application volume and enrolls a limited class. Amherst is also extraordinarily selective, with a much smaller entering class and an admissions process that places intense weight on intellectual engagement, academic preparation, and contribution to its close residential community. For a broadly qualified applicant, both should be treated as reach-level schools rather than as meaningfully safer alternatives to one another.

Northeastern tends to suit students drawn to a larger university in Boston, preprofessional exploration, and its co-op model. Its applicant pool includes many students seeking business, computer science, engineering, health, and other career-connected programs, and applying Early Decision can materially affect the admissions context for applicants who are genuinely ready to commit.

Amherst may be especially difficult for students whose application is built mainly around credentials without a clear academic voice or community presence. As a small liberal arts college with an open curriculum, it looks for students who will use unusual intellectual freedom well, engage deeply in seminar-style classes, and participate actively in campus life. A student with strong humanities, social science, or interdisciplinary interests, even alongside STEM, may find Amherst’s environment a more natural fit.
