Is Northeastern or Caltech harder to get into?

The biggest practical tradeoff in comparing these two is scale versus intensity: Northeastern enrolls a much larger undergraduate population and receives a huge volume of applications, while Caltech is tiny and evaluates for an unusually narrow academic fit centered on extremely advanced STEM strength. In plain terms, Caltech is harder to get into. It is one of the most selective schools in the country, and its applicant pool is self-selecting in a way that makes the bar especially high even among strong students.

Northeastern is also very selective, but in a different way. Its selectivity is shaped partly by popularity, application strategy, and the size of its applicant pool across multiple programs and entry paths. Caltech, by contrast, is looking for students who are not just excellent overall, but who show exceptional preparation and promise in math, science, and technical problem-solving.

That difference matters because a student who looks competitive for Northeastern would not automatically be competitive for Caltech. Caltech tends to expect the highest level of rigor in calculus, physics, and related coursework when available, along with evidence of genuine strength in STEM beyond just good grades. Northeastern has strong academics too, but it is not as singularly specialized in what it is screening for.

So if the question is simply which is harder to get into overall, the clearer answer is Caltech. Northeastern is very competitive, but Caltech sits in a different tier of admissions difficulty because of its tiny class size, highly concentrated mission, and extraordinarily demanding academic profile.
