Boston College vs. American University: Which Has a Better Urban Campus Experience?

The biggest tradeoff is that Boston College offers a more cohesive, classic residential campus with Boston nearby, while American University places you in Washington, D.C.’s daily academic, cultural, and internship ecosystem but in a quieter residential part of the city. Neither campus sits in the middle of a dense downtown district, so “urban” at both schools means using transit rather than stepping directly from the quad into a downtown streetscape.

BC is in Chestnut Hill, several miles west of central Boston. Its campus is notably self-contained and collegiate, and the MBTA Green Line provides a direct connection toward downtown Boston, though getting to neighborhoods such as Back Bay or the Seaport takes time. This setup makes it easier to separate campus life from city life: students can have a strong on-campus routine and go into Boston for restaurants, events, internships, or weekends.

American’s campus is in northwest D.C., near Tenleytown, an area with Metro access, stores, and restaurants but a residential feel. Downtown D.C., museums, Capitol-area opportunities, and many internship sites are readily reachable by Metro, and D.C. tends to feel more woven into student life, especially for students interested in government, policy, international affairs, media, or advocacy. AU also has a defined campus community rather than feeling scattered across the city.

For the more genuinely urban experience, American University has the edge because D.C. is likely to be a more regular part of your academic and professional life. Choose Boston College instead if the stronger priority is a traditional campus atmosphere with a major city available when you want it, rather than constantly surrounding you.
