The biggest practical tradeoff is that Boston College offers a more self-contained, suburban residential campus with Boston nearby, while Northwestern is woven much more directly into Evanston’s walkable downtown and sits on Lake Michigan, with Chicago as a regular but separate destination.

BC’s main campus is in Chestnut Hill, an affluent, largely residential area on Boston’s western edge. The Gothic-style campus has a distinct boundary and a traditional college feel; most daily student life centers on campus rather than on a surrounding commercial district. Students can use the MBTA Green Line from the Boston College stop to reach neighborhoods such as Allston, Brookline, and downtown Boston, but the ride is not as immediate as stepping into a city from campus. Having friends, clubs, or plans in Boston is very feasible, but it takes more intentionality and transit time.

Northwestern’s Evanston campus is also residential and has a defined campus core, but it connects more naturally to shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, grocery stores, and apartments along Sherman Avenue and nearby streets. Evanston feels like a small city or college town rather than a secluded suburb. The lakefront setting is a major part of the atmosphere: students use the paths, beaches, and open lawns in warmer months, and the campus can feel especially scenic and active outdoors.

Downtown Chicago is farther from Northwestern than downtown Boston is from BC in straight-line terms, but Northwestern students have practical CTA Purple Line and Metra options. Chicago is common for internships, concerts, museums, dining, and weekends, though it is not typically where students spend every casual weekday evening.
