What is Stanford known for academically?

I’m building my college list and I keep seeing Stanford described as amazing overall, but I’m trying to understand what it’s especially known for on the academic side.

I’m a junior and I want to know which majors or fields Stanford has the strongest reputation in, beyond just it being a highly ranked school.

Stanford is especially known for computer science, engineering, and entrepreneurship. Its location in Silicon Valley gives it a huge reputation in areas like AI, software, electrical engineering, product design, and startups, so students interested in tech-related fields often see Stanford as one of the strongest places in the country.

It also has a very strong reputation in the natural sciences, especially biology, chemistry, physics, and interdisciplinary research that connects science with medicine or technology. If you are interested in research, Stanford stands out because undergraduates often have access to major labs, faculty projects, and cross-department opportunities.

On the non-STEM side, Stanford is also highly respected in economics, political science, international relations, psychology, and public policy. Its humanities programs are strong too, particularly in history and English, though the school is generally more publicly associated with STEM and innovation than with the traditional liberal arts image.

Another academic strength is how easy it is to work across fields. Stanford is known for blending engineering with business, computer science with biology, or policy with data science.
