How much does applying Restrictive Early Action to Stanford actually improve your chances of admission?

I’m a junior trying to figure out whether Stanford REA is mainly helpful because the applicant pool is stronger, or if applying early really gives some kind of admissions boost.

I know people talk a lot about the early acceptance rate, but I’m not sure how to interpret that compared to regular decision.

Stanford REA does not appear to give a large built-in admissions boost in the way people sometimes imagine.

For Stanford in particular, the difference between REA and RD should be interpreted very cautiously.

What REA may do is slightly improve your odds at the margins for a compelling, clear-cut applicant. The bigger factor is that weaker or unfinished applications are especially risky in REA, since you do not get first-semester senior grades, additional accomplishments, or more time to refine essays.

So the useful way to think about Stanford REA is this: apply early if Stanford is your top choice, your testing and transcript are already strong, your activities profile is well developed, and your essays are genuinely ready. If your profile is still rising, RD is often the better strategic choice.
