Stanford vs Caltech admissions difficulty: which is harder to get into overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus intensity: Stanford draws a much larger, broader applicant pool across nearly every academic and extracurricular area, while Caltech attracts a smaller but extremely concentrated pool of students with unusually deep math and science preparation. That makes both exceptionally hard, but in overall admissions difficulty, Stanford is usually viewed as harder to get into for the average applicant because its appeal is wider and its selection pressure extends across many more types of candidates. Caltech is still brutally selective, just in a more specialized way.

In plain terms, Stanford gets strong applicants from almost every category imaginable: STEM, humanities, entrepreneurship, athletics, arts, research, and public service. For a student whose profile is heavily STEM and especially theoretical or research-focused, Caltech may feel just as hard or even harder because the academic bar in those areas is so unforgiving. Its admissions process tends to care a lot about serious evidence that you can thrive in an intense science and math environment.

So overall, Stanford is usually considered harder to get into in the broadest sense. But for the specific slice of applicants who are truly aiming at Caltech’s core academic niche, Caltech is not meaningfully easier and can be just as daunting.
