Is Boston University or Purdue a better value for an engineering degree?

Purdue particularly suits a student who wants a traditional, engineering-centered campus environment, extensive technical course options, large-scale research, and a broad alumni network in industry. The savings can be substantial enough to matter more than modest differences in starting opportunities, especially if they reduce the need for loans. A student entering a field such as mechanical, electrical, computer, civil, aerospace, or industrial engineering is likely to find robust recruiting and coursework at Purdue.

Boston University can be worth its higher cost for a student whose financial-aid package brings the net price close to Purdue’s, or whose priorities center on being in Boston. BU Engineering is smaller and can feel more intimate, while its location creates convenient access to internships, research hospitals, biotech, startups, consulting, and other Boston-area employers during the academic year. It may fit students who want engineering combined with a more urban, private-university experience and easy cross-disciplinary access to business, health, or liberal arts.

Compare the actual four-year net cost, not sticker price, including travel, housing, annual tuition increases, and expected borrowing. If BU costs tens of thousands more per year after aid, Purdue is difficult to beat on value. If the gap is small and Boston’s urban opportunities genuinely match the student’s career interests, BU can be a sensible investment.
