At either school, joining a lab early will matter more than the name of the institution alone.

UW–Madison is especially compelling for a student who wants many possible directions to explore. Its Department of Psychology spans areas such as clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, neuroscience-related, and social/personality research, alongside strong campus-wide research infrastructure. The advantage is choice: students can investigate several subfields and find large, established labs. Its size can make it easier to build a recognizable relationship with a professor, move from basic research-assistant tasks toward independent responsibility, and connect psychology with adjacent fields such as neuroscience, education, or medicine. Lab availability still varies significantly by professor and research area.

For psychology research access and close mentorship specifically, Vanderbilt has a modest edge. Choose UW–Madison instead if the wider range of psychology specialties is important to you and you are comfortable navigating a larger research environment proactively.
