Apply Michigan Early Action unless Vanderbilt is your unequivocal first choice, your family has reviewed its net price estimate, and you would be genuinely ready to enroll there over Michigan if admitted. Vanderbilt ED is a binding commitment, while Michigan EA preserves the option to compare both admission and financial-aid outcomes before making a May decision. Vanderbilt will release an ED admit only when the aid package makes attendance unaffordable, not simply because Michigan later feels more appealing.

The academic and campus experiences are meaningfully different. Vanderbilt is a smaller private university in Nashville, with a more intimate undergraduate environment and relatively easy cross-school exploration through its liberal arts-centered curriculum. Michigan is a much larger public research university in Ann Arbor, offering exceptional scale, a broader menu of majors and student organizations, and the energy of major athletics and a large alumni network.

Cost should carry real weight, especially for Michigan residents, since in-state tuition can make Michigan substantially less expensive.
